About Khan Terelj
The legend of Turtle Rock
A granite rock twenty metres high, shaped like a turtle, stands in the valley of Khan Terelj. The legend says that the turtle once guarded this valley: to shelter people and animals from calamity it turned itself into stone and closed the way against the cold winds of the north. Ever since, the people of the valley have honoured the rock as a sign of long life and steady fortune, tying a blue scarf to it and offering a quiet wish as they pass.
